Cyclists from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) showcase community strength by jointly organising a successful event to celebrate World Bicycle Day.
Event Highlights:
On 7th June 2026, a large group of cyclists from across the MMR region gathered at the Worli promenade to celebrate UN World Bicycle Day. The event was graced by Amruta Fadnavis, Jackie Shroff, and Taha Shah as guests of honor. Decathlon Sports India backed the initiative, awarding medals to the participants, while journalists from various media houses were present to cover this landmark gathering. The iconic coastal backdrop provided the perfect setting for this spectacular ride.

Team Effort:
What made this event truly unique was the collective synergy; with all the major cycling clubs from the MMR region forming a team to co-organize the ride. The planning process started two months in advance, with group leaders working in a highly structured manner. Through virtual meetings, they coordinated guest invites, official permissions, route inspections, hydration points, breakfast boxes, T-shirts, and stage setups. The execution was flawless, running smoothly without a single error or complaint. Hats off to the entire cycling community and every single volunteer for taking ownership and ensuring a grand success.

A Ride for Everyone:
Apart from regular riders, the event attracted several first-time cyclists. The ride provided a great opportunity for inexperienced riders to get a feel of a critical-mass ride, allowing them to interact with and learn from senior cyclists. It is fantastic to see these events attract fresh legs into the cycling ecosystem, helping the community grow.
The 5 km loop around the Worli area saw a diverse group of audience: kids, students, Gen-Z, senior citizens, visually impaired riders, corporate professionals, and government employees. The sheer variety of bicycles on display was a treat to watch, featuring recumbent bikes, tandem bikes, hybrids, MTBs, vintage steel frames, classic roadsters, folding bikes, e-bikes, and high-end carbon racers parked neatly in rows.
Thanks to all the participants for following instructions and maintaining discipline. Large crowds can sometimes become difficult to manage; as seen at the World Bicycle Day event in Delhi, which unfortunately faced chaos with people fighting over bikes and free merchandise. In contrast, the Mumbai crowd acted with absolute grace, patience, and maturity. It is a matter of immense pride for the city.

Location Advantage:
While the newly opened Coastal Road promenade features a dedicated 7km cycling track running parallel to the old Worli promenade, the organizers strategically decided to utilize the main Worli section to safely and efficiently accommodate the massive group of 2,000 cyclists. The weather was slightly humid, but the stunning views of the Arabian Sea and the energetic atmosphere completely compensated for it.ย Seeing the coastal sea-front filled with cycling enthusiasts pedaling together was an amazing sight.ย These visuals send a clear message: the city has a strong appetite for cycling, provided citizens are given safe, dedicated infrastructure. We hope the administration takes note of this turnout and continues working to improve Mumbai’s cycling culture.
Broader Alignment:
This World Bicycle Day celebration seamlessly aligned with the Fit India Movementโsย โSundays On Cycleโย campaign; a pan-India initiative encouraging every city to host weekend rides to combat sedentary lifestyles. Cycling is one of the most effective tools for improving both mental and physical health while fighting lifestyle challenges like obesity and diabetes. The Sports Authority of India, MyBharat, and BMC also extended crucial support to community leaders to make this arrangement possible. A big thank you to every MMR cyclist who showed up and made it happen!
