APARNA VINOD’S CAMPAIGN “PEDAL FOR THE PLANET” AIMS TO INSPIRE PEOPLE

Aparna Vinod isn’t your average cyclist. While many take to two wheels for recreation or sport, Aparna sees her bicycle as a tool for change. Her ongoing campaign, aptly named “Pedal for the Planet,” is more than just a bike tour; it’s a movement inspiring individuals and communities to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle, one pedal stroke at a time.

Kerala to Gujarat:

Aparna, a mother of two kids is on a self-supported, multi-day bicycle tour and riding from her hometown Wayanad in Kerala to Somnath Temple in Gujarat. With her ‘Pedal for the Planet’ mission, she will be covering a total distance of 2200 kms in this journey by riding along the west coast of India. Aparna started her road trip on 12th November 2023 and arrived in Mumbai last week. On Sunday, 3rd December, a special ride was organised by the cycling clubs in Mumbai to welcome Aparna and interact with her. Pleasantries were exchanged and I had a chance to do a video interview with her. Her full interview will be published on my YouTube channel “Pedal and Tring Tring” (Subscribe here).

Excerpts of the Interview:

Question: What has been your most challenging experience of this tour?

Answer: The most challenging things I faced are lack of clean public toilets. I have to drink a coffee from a nice restaurant or buy food from a high-priced place to get access to clean toilets and that is my foremost challenge. We badly need the infrastructure so that all types of travelers get the comfort and convenience to answer a natures call.

The second challenge is to do with my monthly cycle. Being a woman, I can’t keep that aside just because I planned a bicycle tour. So, that made it a little difficult for me to account it in my schedule. My tour was planned to be limited to twenty days, but the periods issue has prolonged it slightly.

Both these situations have made my tour a little tricky and I have to take a brief pause at intervals and move on.

Leading a Sustainable lifestyle:

Aparna’s passion for cycling began organically. As a traveler, she witnessed the struggles of many Indian cities with pollution and traffic congestion. This ignited a desire to find alternative solutions, leading her to discover the transformative power of cycling. As she explored her city on two wheels, she noticed a change – not just in her own well-being, but in the environment around her. The air felt cleaner, the streets less chaotic, and a sense of community began to blossom among fellow cyclists.

Pedal for the Planet:

“Pedal for the Planet” was born from this realization. It’s not about promoting cycling as a mere substitute for conventional transportation; it’s about reimagining our relationship with our cities and our planet. Aparna’s campaign uses an engaging bicycle tour, with cycling communities and social media initiatives to spread awareness about the environmental and social benefits of cycling. She collaborates with local cycling groups, NGOs, and even government bodies enroute to organize events and create safe cycling infrastructure.

Sustainable Future:

Aparna’s reach extends beyond Wayanad. She actively participates in national cycling events, spreading her message and garnering support from cyclists across India. After she finishes her ongoing bicycle tour, she plans to document her cycling journey, challenges, and triumphs, inspiring others to join the movement. She believes in pedal power and is of the view that when people come together for a common cause, and work as a unified force, we can achieve our goals of attaining a sustainable society.

Inspiration for Many:

Aparna Vinod is a beacon of hope in a world grappling with environmental challenges. Her “Pedal for the Planet” campaign is a testament to the power of individual action and collective spirit. It’s a reminder that even the smallest steps, like a simple bicycle tour, can contribute to a greener, healthier planet. So, the next time you see someone cycling past, remember – they might not just be getting from point A to point B; they might be pedaling for a better future, one revolution at a time.

Join the Trail:

Aparna’s story is one of hope and inspiration. It’s a reminder that we all have the power to make a difference, no matter how small our actions may seem. So, let’s take a cue from Aparna, dust off our bicycles, and start pedaling towards a greener, healthier future, one gear at a time.
