Jos Sluijsmans is the Director of International Cargo Bike Festival (ICBF), co-founder of Dutch Bicycle Center, and member of the Dutch Cycling Embassy and European Cycle Logistics Federation. After working as an interpreter and translator in Spanish for ten years and practicing law for eight years during the early stages of his career, Jos Sluijsmans ventured into cycling business and launched Fietsdiensten.nl in 2004. He started as a bike messenger and delivered organic and local food to restaurants by cargo bike. Jos also gave cycling lessons to people with physical and mental challenges.

Sanjay Sharma a thirty eight year old man living in Mumbai arrives at Carter Road, Bandra to sell ice creams. He is seen at the same spot everyday from 9 pm to 3 am servicing local tourists and people who visit the area for night walks. Families travelling in cars and motorbikes often stop by to eat ice creams with their children. His bright red tricycle can easily be seen from far as he mostly prefers to stand under a street lamp.

IN CONVERSATION WITH OLE KASSOW

#WORLD SENIOR CITIZENS DAY

Cycling Without Age (CWA) is a social movement originating in Copenhagen, Denmark and was launched in 2012 by Ole Kassow. The purpose of the organisation is to invite socially isolated seniors back into their local communities by engaging them in mutually beneficial and stimulating trishaw rides with volunteers (trishaws are also known as cycle rickshaws, bike taxi and tri-cycle taxi).

Ole wanted to help the elderly get back on their bicycles, but he had to find a solution to their limited mobility. The answer was a trishaw and he started offering free bike rides to the local nursing home residents.

Workers on a bicycle ship various types of goods and those includes newspapers, bakery items, cement bags, gas cans, water cans, plants, paper cartons, TV sets, water tanks, furniture, milk, ice creams,  ice slabs, vegetables, coconuts, lunch boxes, food, clothing, machinery and much beyond one can think off. The carrier on the bicycle plays a crucial role in bearing majority of the load.

The Dabbawalas is a tiffin service in Mumbai and world famous for making almost error free deliveries of lunch boxes around the business centers in the city. The Dabbawalas collect lunch boxes from homes by early afternoon, deliver them to customers at their offices, pick up empty boxes and return them to its origin before evening.

On the busy streets of Mumbai there is a section of people who use bicycles as a primary mode of transport. In fact, they are independent transporters who move goods around the city on a bicycle. You will easily spot them bearing all kind of loads dressed in simple clothing throughout the day. Majority of those cyclists are men who operate wearing a shirt, trouser, shorts and slippers.
