The Smart City of Mumbai had its own Bicycle Factory called the ‘National Bicycle Corporation of India Ltd.’ (NBCIL) in the prime area of Worli spread over 4 acres of land. The NBCIL was established in 1939 by Birla Group to manufacture Bicycle and Bicycle parts with installed capacity of 5,44,000 bicycles as stated on their website. IN CONVERSATION WITH LIZ CANNING

Filmmaker Liz Canning cycled everywhere until she had twins in 2008. Hauling babies via car was not only unsustainable but took the freedom and adventure out of life, and Liz felt trapped. She Googled “family bike” and uncovered a global movement of people replacing cars with cargo bikes. Liz set out to learn more and MOTHERLOAD was born.

MOTHERLOAD is a crowdsourced documentary about a new mother’s quest to understand the increasing isolation and disconnection of the digital age, its planetary impact, and how cargo bikes could be an antidote.

Liz’s work has screened internationally, winning awards including a Sundance Special Jury Prize (American Blackout – editor/producer). After graduating from Brown University in Semiotics, Liz worked at San Francisco’s Artists Television Access and Film Arts Foundation while making films. Her award-winning Handmirror/Brushset Included screened internationally, on PBS and at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC (distributed by Art Com).

Since 2000, Liz has worked as a professional filmmaker focused on editing and animation for documentaries. Girls Rock! secured theatrical distribution and featured five animated sequences created by Liz and to demonstrate the cultural forces affecting young girls.

IN CONVERSATION WITH VIOLA

Artistic cycling is a niche form of competitive indoor cycling in which athletes perform tricks using customized fixed-geared bicycles.

The sport is a combination of cycling, gymnastics, dance and acrobatics. It is often referred as ‘Freestyle Cycling’ or ‘Cycling Ballet’ due to refined, elegance and creativity displayed by performers. In the competition, professional athletes perform before a panel of judges in five-minute rounds that includes 30 figures. (Stunts are called ‘figures’ in UCI competition). Each figure delivered by an athlete is evaluated on various parameters such as level of difficulty, balance, grace, form, strength, style and flawlessness.

Viola Brand is a 25 year old professional freestyle cyclist who was born and raised in Stuttgart, Germany. She started artistic cycling when she was 6 years old. Viola Brand is a two time Vice-World Champion with multiple European Championships under her name.
