BICYCLE LOGISTICS: PROJECT PROVIDES FIRST COMPREHENSIVE INDUSTRY OVERVIEW OF THE ECOSYSTEM AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ACTION FOR STAKEHOLDERS AND MUNICIPALITIES

The online platform “Atlas of Bicycle Logistics” is a knowledge platform, reference work and source of inspiration and is being consolidated.

Four white papers provide analyses and recommendations for action for industry players, public administrations and other stakeholders.

Frankfurt am Main, Berlin, April 30, 2025 – After 28 months of intensive collaboration, the consortium consisting of the German Bicycle Logistics Association (Radlogistikverband Deutschland e. V.) (consortium leader), cargobike.jetzt GmbH, and House of Logistics and Mobility (HOLM) GmbH has published significant results of the iKnowRadlogistik logistics project. The project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) as part of the National Cycling Plan (NRVP) 3.0, aims to establish bicycle logistics as an important component of urban logistics and utilize its potential for environmentally friendly urban logistics.

One of the key project results is the online platform “Atlas of Bicycle Logistics,” published in April 2024. In addition to basic information on bicycle logistics and its ecosystem, it provides a nationwide knowledge map listing current bicycle logistics activities and stakeholders. The more than 420 entries submitted to date include a nationwide overview of manufacturers of commercial cargo bikes, bike trailers, and bicycle logistics and courier companies, the network of existing micro-depots, and innovative pilot projects. The Atlas of Bicycle Logistics also provides an overview of current funding programs and purchase incentives. It will remain in this form and be continuously updated to serve as a sustainable digital hub for all stakeholders in the industry and beyond.

Michael Kadow, Managing Director of HOLM GmbH, says: “The digital ‘Atlas of Bicycle Logistics’ was completely redeveloped and has generated significant attention since day one. We were delighted by this early and rapidly growing response, which has helped establish and raise awareness of bicycle logistics.”

Another key outcome is the four white papers published during the project. They contain broad insights on various objectives and key recommendations for scaling nationwide bicycle logistics. The resulting recommendations and strategies for industry players and municipalities, as well as 23 selected and developed good practice examples, are available free of charge to practitioners and representatives from politics and administration as planning support in the “Atlas of Bicycle Logistics.”

“I am thrilled with the project results. The Atlas of Bicycle Logistics clearly demonstrates that the industry is represented nationwide, in small towns and metropolises, and strengthens local economies. Demand for the information is enormous, so we want to continue developing it in the future,” explains Dr. Tom Assmann, Chairman of the German Bicycle Logistics Association.

“The Atlas of Bicycle Logistics is a fundamental building block in knowledge generation on the topic of bicycles in commercial transport. The structured overview of guidelines and best practices enables stakeholders to promote bicycle logistics locally. We are pleased about this digital tool to strengthen the industry,” explains Eileen Niehaus, Managing Director of cargobike.jetzt.

The project ends on April 30, 2025. iKnowRadlogistik received €270,000 in funding from the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMDV) under the guidelines for funding non-investment model projects. Total project implementation costs amounted to almost €340,000. The project sponsor is the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM).
