Netherlands is crazy when it comes to cycling. People ride all kinds of bicycles. What type of a bicycles they are capable of riding is something beyond our imagination. You name a design and it’s there on the street. A variety of bicycles are used for different purposes. I was overwhelmed to see so much diversity in usage of bicycles by the citizens across demographics.

A bicycle in Dutch language is known as “Fiets” and a cyclist is referred as a “Fietser”. I can’t describe how beautiful the country of Netherlands is and how deeply cycling is penetrated in the country. No wonder, they have earned a title of “Fiets Paradise” and offer the best cycling experience in the world.

The Netherlands is a small country and is famous for a lot of things such as clogs, cheese, stroopwafles, windmills, canals, tulips, nightlife, architecture, and bicycles. Cycling in Netherlands is an everyday activity, and the Dutch people don’t regard it as a special initiative. Cycling is normal and a daily routine which gets them going from A to B and B to C and so on.

The Hague city hosted its first bicycle flash mob on the World Bicycle Day which is celebrated on the 3rd of June every year around the globe. This day was declared by the United Nations in 2018 so this year it was the 5th anniversary of the World Bicycle Day event.

CYCLING IN AMSTERDAM ON KINGS DAY

It is impressive to know that the world’s biggest outdoor birthday party is held on the ‘Kings Day’ in the Netherlands. Kings Day marks the birthday of the King Willem-Alexander and observed as a national holiday on the 27th April.

Celebrations include concerts and special events in public spaces, particularly in Amsterdam. The festivities are organized by local associations called ‘Orange Committees’.
