DUTCH MOBILITY EXPERT GEERT KLOPPENBURG VISITS MUMBAI FOR TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH

One of the Netherlands top transport minds ‘Geert Kloppenburg’ recently made a visit to Mumbai for his research project about the existing transportation systems and how it can be made better. This blog captures the highlights from his ten day visit.

Background story:

In June 2025, I made a trip to the Netherlands to make a documentary film on Dutch Cycling and Interconnected Mobility. Geert and I had formalised an appointment in the city of Haarlem and Geert took me around and shared his valuable expert insights. I am not elaborating on the topics that we discussed because I want everyone to see it in the final documentary once it is released.

Completing the loop:

Three months later in October 2025, Geert came to Mumbai to make films on various topics (I am holding onto the topics and Geert will reveal them at a later stage). From Amsterdam to Andheri, Geert made many surprise moves which inspired me positively. From dismantling his bike and carrying it in a rickshaw, to loading it on a Kaali-Peeli (Black & Yellow) taxi roof, Geert’s actions are out of the rule books. He travelled in the peak hours of a Mumbai local train, and negotiated slow moving vehicles like a pro on his bicycle flowing like a fluid without losing momentum. I am amazed by his daring, adaptive and flexible approach to ‘act like a local’ and it never appeared that he is new to the chaotic city. Geert’s passion for his work is admirable because he gave up his comfort and deep dived on his research project with full conviction. This is just a fraction of what he did and let’s wait for his documentary films to be out.

Where do we go from here?

Geert and I are planning a joint mobility event (dates are to be finalised) which will create an opportunity for knowledge exchange and open up business avenues for companies and consultants in the Netherlands and India.

How can we collaborate?

We are open to co-create this event and if you would like to learn more about it, please send us an email “geert@geertkloppenburg.nl” and “pedalandtringtring@gmail.com” and we will revert back to you.
